The Cambodian Financial Intelligence Unit (CAFIU) was established in early 2008 as an independent decision-making body under the National Bank of Cambodia as a result of the Law on Anti-Money Laundering and Combatting the Financing of Terrorism, promulgated in 2007 in order to better comply with international standards. The primary mission of CAFIU is to deny use of the Cambodian financial system to those who obtained funds and property as a result of illegal activity, and to those who would use it to conduct or support terrorist activities. The main legal functions assigned to CAFIU include the receipt of suspicious and cash transaction reports, collecting of information related to money laundering and the financing of terrorism, analysis of received reports, and dissemination of analyses to law enforcement when there is reason to believe that a money laundering or terrorist financing offense has been committed. A number of supporting functions have also been assigned. CAFIU strives to perform these functions with a dedicated staff adhering to the highest professional and ethical standards.
